PlayStation Plus Games – May 2019

PlayStation Plus Free Games - May

PlayStation Plus Free Games – May

The start of another month is here, and with that we have some new PlayStation Plus games to download and play. My aim here is to give you a general overview of each game from a few different perspectives to see if you would enjoy playing them.

PlayStation Plus Games

This month’s PS Plus games line up has been met with h3 criticism from gamers. The announcement that Overcooked and What Remains of Edith Finch would be this month’s games resulted in a bombardment of dislikes on PlayStation’s announcement video.

With this in mind, I decided to take a look at these games for myself to see what we can expect from them.

May’s PlayStation Plus Games

As mentioned, the two games offered this month are:

  • Overcooked
  • What Remains of Edith Finch

These 2 games are valued at €35.98 (which is a decrease in value from last month) but are free for you PlayStation Plus subscribers this month.

Indie Simulator

Overcooked is a couch co-op game where you and up to 3 other players prepare meals in a chaotic kitchen where timing and coordination and a lot of patience are the keys to success.

Each level has different hazards and obstacles to navigate as you and your team rush to prepare and serve meals within a time limit.

Many people cite Overcooked as a great game to play with others who aren’t as into gaming, whether that be a family member or significant other. Consequently, this is definitely something to consider if you’re thinking about trying out this game.

Metacritic Score

78/100 Overcooked – Metacritic

Trophy Hunting

  • This game has 11 available trophies (No DLC)
  • Average Completion: 43%
  • Platinum Achievers: Unfortunately, this game doesn’t have a Platinum trophy
  • Overcooked – PSN Profiles

My Take

As a game on it’s own, Overcooked looks to be a fun couch co-op game to play with friends or family. The graphics look colorful and fun while the concept of the game itself will test the limits of how well you work with your team.

Having said that, more avid trophy hunters in particular will be disappointed by a lack of any platinum trophy.

Puzzle, Indie, Walking Sim

What Remains of Edith Finch is an adventure game (also tagged as a walking simulator) that tells the tragic story of the Finch family. Each death is recounted through a short game play sequence narrated by Edith.

Metacritic Score

88/100 What Remains of Edith Finch – Metacritic

Trophy Hunting

My Take

Again, as a standalone game, this one rates pretty highly with a score of 88/100 on Metacritic. The concept of the game and the stories it tells sounds very interesting. However, as an indie game with a large enough following, I can imagine that anyone interested in this game already owns it.

Again, there are no platinum trophies to be earned here which may disappoint some. The fact that both games are like this is not ideal.

OK, so both of these games having been announced for PS Plus has received a lot of criticism, there is no denying that.

Looking at these 2 games together as a package, it seems like a good idea. Both are highly rated indie titles with a large fan base. We saw how well an indie title like Celeste fared at the Game Awards in 2018, so why not continue to promote these kinds of titles?

Is it a case that there needs to be more variety in the choices of games included in PS Plus each month? Last month’s games seemed to offer that variety but still failed to please.

Due to the dwindling number of games now received each month, are gamers expecting a higher standard of games? I know its virtually impossible to please everyone but what is the secret sauce that works for picking these games? As always I seem to have more questions than answers but it’s interesting to speculate the decisions behind these choices.

An interesting observation I came across on Reddit was the idea of allowing PS Plus members to choose games from the vast back catalog of PS Plus games. Unless you have been a PS Plus member from the year dot, you won’t have access to all of those games. Would it perhaps be a good idea to allow members to pick one or more of these games each month as well as or in addition to that month’s games?

In my opinion this would be a great idea depending on it’s implementation. This article compiled by lists all of games previously released on PS Plus. I’ve never looked into this before but it seems this is quite a great list of games. As someone who has only just acquired PS Plus for the first time, being able to access some of these older games would be a welcome incentive to renew my subscription.

As always I look forward to not only playing this month’s games but to the next month of games to see how things continue.

Let me know what you thought of this month’s games. Will you be downloading them or do you already own them? Let me know what you think via social media, I would love to hear from you!
