The PlayStation 4 is such an amazing console. It shows just how far we’ve come since the days of the original console, the PlayStation 1.
What’s more, to date it has sold more than 70 million units worldwide; quite the achievement.
If you are thinking about buying a PlayStation 4 or have just bought one, you are in for a treat!
There are so many excellent titles available, with more to come in 2020, that you’ll have a hard time knowing where to begin.
With this in mind, I put together a list of awesome games to play right now if you are new to the PlayStation 4.
All of the games on this list for me define this console.
Just to stipulate though, the games on this list are only games that I own or have played. So with that in mind, you might have some different thoughts on what this list should look like.
With that said, let’s take a look at this list of games to play if you are new to PlayStation 4.
What Is The Most Played Game On PS4?
Let’s start things off by answering the question, just what is the most played game on the PS4?
The amount of people playing a game is certainly an indication of how good the game is, so it makes sense to look into just that.
It might seem impossible to figure this out but fortunately, thanks to some very bright people, we have a pretty accurate idea.
Some avid PlayStation gamers may be familiar with My PS4 Life. This feature essentially packages your gaming stats from the last year into a nice shareable showcase video.
Now, you might be wondering what the heck this has to do with anything; well, stick with me here.
Some very clever gamer managed to reverse engineer this data to find out just how many players were playing any given game.
Though the numbers aren’t 100% accurate, it does give a really good indication of how many people are playing these games.
Top of the list was Grand Theft Auto V with almost 56 million players!

Gameranx has a great video that summarizes all of this if you want to learn more about it.
Check it out below:
1. Grand Theft Auto V
GTA V is an action-adventure game that was released in 2013 by Rockstar Games.
This game is set in the fictional state of San Andreas and follows the story of 3 criminals as they commit crimes, drive without regard for traffic laws and blow stuff up.
To be honest here, I have not played a Grand Theft Auto game before. Aside from 10 – 15 minutes on the PS2 which I can barely remember.
I know that sounds blasphemous to say but it’s on my backlog list of games to play I swear!
What PS4 Games Have The Most Nostalgia?
Gaming can have the power to give us a feeling of nostalgia which is sometimes not possible to describe.
Playing the games from your childhood as an adult is a great experience which is why I’m always seeking out old games to play.
In the age of gaming that we are in right now, lots of these games are being remade for the current generation of consoles. This for many gamers is just the best!
The 2 games I have picked for this section fill me with nostalgia and they were a must buy as soon as they came out.
2. Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet and Clank is one of the most iconic PlayStation mascots for many. Though I’m sure the same can be said for all of the games on this list.
The Ratchet and Clank series of games are action platformers that follow the story of 2 unlikely characters, Ratchet and Clank, as they battle their way through the star system and beyond.
Ratchet is a wrench wielding Lombax, and clank is a defective robot with a heart of gold.. and bolts and stuff.
These protagonists had me and many others invested in their story right from the beginning.
For me, this was the first game I ever played on the PlayStation 2, continuing my love of gaming to a new console from my trusty old PlayStation 1.
This brings us nicely to the newest game in the series: the Ratchet and Clank remake on the PlayStation 4.
This game was released in 2016 and had fans very excited. The game takes the story and all of the elements from the first amazing game and rebuilds it from the ground up.
Complete with stunning graphics, interesting characters and tons of collectibles and upgrades.
The game also ties in with the cinematic feature film which follows the same story-line, also released in 2016.
This game was the reason I bought a PlayStation 4, so that should say something.
What’s more, this game is now part of the PlayStation Essentials collection. This means you can pick it up for a steal pretty much anywhere.
As well as that, for those platinum hunters out there this is a pretty easy and super fun game to complete. I earned the platinum throughout 2 playthroughs and enjoyed my time playing it so much.
3. Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled is the ground-up recreation of Crash Team Racing on the PS1. It also features content from Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Tag Team Racing.
This revamped racing game was released in June 2019. I bought it day one without hesitation.
You might be surprised to see this game on this list but I would argue that this is such a fun and entertaining way to experience racing games on the PS4.
With a vast roster of characters and a story mode that tests your abilities, this game will keep you and your family entertained to no end.
What’s more, you can also experience multiplayer races which was everyone’s dream when playing this game originally on the PS1.
I’ve been enjoying this game so much that I’ve written a series of Gaming Guides to help you win more races:
What PS4 Games Have The Best Graphics?
We all want to see the games that test the absolute limits of a console in terms of its graphics capabilities.
What games have water graphics so amazing you feel like you are swimming yourself?
What games can create visual landscapes that adapt to different weather conditions like you would see in real life?
The 2 games I have picked for this section, for me, showcase the best that PlayStation 4 graphics has to offer.
4. God of War
God of War is an action-adventure game that was released in 2018.
This was the highly anticipated next game in the God of War series of games developed by Santa Monica Studio.
This game shows the God of War himself, Kratos, in a different light.
Instead of just mindlessly destroying his enemies in massive violent battles; well, this game does still have that to an extent. But more than that, and more importantly, it also shows how Kratos behaves as a father to his son Atreus.
You are tasked with transporting the remains of Atreus’ mother to spread her ashes at the highest peak of the nine realms.
I cannot recommend this game enough. You experience the fantastic design of characters and settings as well as sound and music design that is second to none in this generation.
What’s more, the story holds your attention and is told in such a beautiful way.
If you don’t believe me that you should play this game, then consider that it won game of the year in 2018 beating several great contenders. That is quite the achievement and shows just how great this game is.
There has never been a better time to buy God of War as it is now part of the PlayStation Essentials collection.
5. Horizon Zero Dawn
Horizon Zero Dawn is an action role-playing game released on the PlayStation 4 in 2017.
The game was released to pretty great reviews overall but it has to be played to truly experience the world that this game creates.
You play as Aloy, the outcast huntress whose story you become heavily invested in throughout the game.
Together, you explore the vast landscapes and battle against the many mechanized creatures that inhabit the lands of this post-apocalyptic world.
This game showcases, without doubt, the stunning graphics capabilities of the PlayStation 4.
The world is so well designed; the grass flows and dances just like it does in real life, the snow makes imprints as Aloy strolls through it, the mechanical beasts.. OK are not real, but the way they look and the way they move almost makes me believe that they could be real.
To get the most out of this game, I would highly recommend picking up the Complete Edition which contains all of the DLC in one package. This game is also part of the PlayStation Essentials collection which makes it a reasonably priced game.
What PS4 Games Are The Best Remasters?
Remasters of games will usually take games from the PlayStation 3 and update them for the PlayStation 4.
Remasters don’t functionally change too much about the game usually. They oftentimes put a fresh coat of polish on them by upscaling the graphics slightly.
For those that don’t own a PlayStation 3 or those who don’t want to be inundated with different consoles, this can be great.
For other more avid gamers and collectors, it can give them the chance to play these games again.
The games that I have chosen for this section, for me, capture what remasters are: a way of experiencing a video game series for the first time without having to think about it.
6. Uncharted Collection
The Uncharted series debuted on the PlayStation 3 in 2007.
It is an action-adventure, third-person shooter that follows explorer and treasure hunter Nathan Drake.
Though I am relatively new to this series of games, I am definitely a fan after playing through this collection. The updated graphics and better aiming mechanics have allowed me to experience these games without any effort or difficulty and I really appreciated that.
This collection includes the first 3 games of the Uncharted series that have been very well remastered for the PS4.
The Indiana Jones like storyline (let’s face it) combined with the lush green jungle scenery and the interesting new characters of the first game had me hooked from the start.
The environments, the collectibles and the trophies available in this game allowed for massive replay-ability and I will definitely be returning to these games to collect everything.
The Uncharted Collection for the PlayStation 4 is also part of the PlayStation Essentials collection. This means it is available for a pretty reasonable price.
7. Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far
The Kingdom Hearts series of games is a great example of combining 2 unlikely things, in this case, Final Fantasy and Disney, to create something special.
This series of games has captivated its loyal audience over the last number of years.
Most recently, with the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 on January 29th 2019, everybody is trying their hand at these games.
The Kingdom Hearts series features a wide variety of characters.
The main protagonist you play as is Sora, whose world is turned into darkness and destroyed by the Heartless.
Gaining the power of the Keyblade to battle the heartless with, Sora is joined by Donald and Goofy on his adventures to all of the Disney worlds you could shake a stick at.
OK, so outside of games 1 and 2 and now 3 this story is a little different.
However, I’m not going to give you an overview of the whole in-depth story here, I wouldn’t do it justice.
The vast amount of games in this series might be enough to turn away potential new fans. With that said, I would encourage anyone to buy this game as your entryway into the series.
I hope you enjoyed this list and found it helpful. Let’s summarize the games to finish up:
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Ratchet & Clank
- Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled
- God Of War
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Uncharted Collection
- Kingdom Hearts: The Story So Far
Hopefully, you now have some ideas for what games to play right now on PlayStation 4.
