With the release of the highly anticipated game Kingdom Hearts 3 only a week away, there may be those of you who are itching to play it. Having recently become reacquainted with Kingdom Hearts, I am definitely one of those people.
Waiting patiently for a game to release can be difficult at the best of times. This got me thinking about games that I could play which would fill my Kingdom Heart shaped keyhole!
See what I did there?
Anyway, with this is in mind, I put together a short list of games that are well worth playing if you enjoy Kingdom Hearts and just want more.
I have condensed the items on this list into a helpful infographic for your reference. Feel free to share it.
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 & 2.5 Remix
OK so this is technically a cheat entry. However, it is worth mentioning for those of you who want to catch up on the expansive story line before diving into Kingdom Hearts 3.
Those of you that are in any way familiar with the Kingdom Hearts franchise know of the wealth of games and story-line complexity that come with Kingdom Hearts. As a result, unless you are a die-hard fan of the series, this can become quite confusing.
As someone who has not been very actively playing Kingdom Hearts other than 1 and 2 for the PS2 I can relate to the concern of where to even begin to catch up.
This is why the 1.5 & 2.5 Remix for the PS4 is an excellent investment, and one I personally made recently due to its reduced price over the holidays.
Not only do you get pretty much all of the games to date but you can also play through them in their highest quality on the PS4.
1.5 and 2.5 Remix games included:
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories
- Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (HD Remastered cinematics)
- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep Final Mix
- Kingdom Hearts Re:coded (HD Remastered cinematics)
1.5 and 2.5 Remix price:
Final Fantasy VII
Due to the wealth of Final Fantasy characters and references contained in the Kingdom Hearts universe, it makes sense to include a Final Fantasy game on this list.
Final Fantasy fans are likely to get more enjoyment from these characters and references. What’s more, its adds that extra dimension of gamer nostalgia which keeps you hooked to the games.
As someone who has almost never played a Final Fantasy game myself (other than Final Fantasy X many moons ago), I feel as though I am missing out and want to know more about these characters; especially Moogles or whatever those guys are called!
There is a lot of debate among the Final Fantasy fans as to which is the best game, I’ll let you decide; but for me, I am going to start with Final Fantasy VII to see what all the fuss is about.

Dark Cloud was released in Europe all the way back in 2001. As of December 2015 it is now available for digital download from the PlayStation Store.
This is great news for fans of the series like me who don’t own a physical copy.
This game, and its sequel Dark Chronicle, offer a gripping story with well imagined characters, addictive dungeon crawling, weapon modification and resource collection mechanics.
A magical formula that closely resembles that of Kingdom Hearts in my opinion; well minus a whole load of Disney characters.
As mentioned, Dark Cloud and its sequel Dark Chronicle are now available on the PlayStation Store if you don’t own them for the PS2.
Physical copies of these games are quite rare and expensive to buy so it makes sense to try them out for a fair price on the PlayStation Store.

Ratchet and Clank
Ratchet and Clank (released in 2016 on PlayStation 4) was my hands down favorite game of that year. Mostly due to its nostalgia inducing appeal.
Ok, so this might be a bit of a stretch to link these to games together, but just go with me.
Kingdom Hearts gives you an enjoyable story with lovable and comprehensive characters that you want to see succeed against all odds; so does Ratchet and Clank.
Kingdom Hearts allows you to explore an array of different and unusual worlds while battling against unimaginable enemies and bosses; so too does Ratchet and Clank.
Kingdom Hearts gives you the tools to smash boxes and collect things… Yes Ratchet and Clank does this too.
OK so its not all the same, but why should it be. I would simply argue that if you enjoy playing Kingdom Hearts that you will enjoy playing Ratchet and Clank. This game is a very reasonable price to purchase now so I would highly recommend it.

Monster Hunter World
For those of you that enjoy the grinding and weapon modification systems that Kingdom Hearts games allow for but just want more of that, Monster Hunter may be worth adding to your list.
The release of Monster Hunter World in 2018 made this series much more accessible to newcomers.
This game offers you an outlet for your grinding, collecting and upgrading desires. The game invites you to slay monsters, collect resources, investigate environments and so much more.
This game also features multiplayer online access for those of you with a PlayStation Plus subscription which makes taking down monsters that much easier. It also makes the game a lot more exiting in my opinion.
What’s more, the game is constantly being updated with seasonal events, special characters and collectibles.
The most recent announcement sees Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher series staking his claim as a top monster hunter.

So there you have it, my 5 game choices for games to play if you enjoy Kingdom Hearts; including that one cheat entry which totally counts.
I hope you enjoyed this list and it gave you some inspiration for what you could play while you wait for the release of Kingdom Hearts 3.
