5 games in my gaming backlog

The dreaded gaming backlog is a term many gamers fear the world over. That stack of games that you have yet to play or yet to finish. It haunts you day and night, just waiting to be played.

Well OK, this might be an exaggeration for most of you I know. Personally, I think about my gaming backlog every so often but I don’t let it bother me too much. If I actually compiled a full list of my backlog it would seem pretty daunting to be honest. So I guess you could say I am in denial a little bit.

Over the new year, as people were making new year’s resolutions to play more games, I was thinking about Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. I was too busy and didn’t care to make any resolutions for this year.

So now that it’s February and I feel a little bit more directed to completing games instead of just having them on my shelf looking pretty. With this in mind, I put together a very small list of games that I have that I am almost embarrassed that I haven’t completed yet.

I am hoping that by putting together this list I will hold myself accountable to actually completing these games. I don’t expect to get platinums in any or all of these games, I am a realist. Though I do expect, at the very least, to be able to complete the story of each of the games.

Anyway, enough of that, here is the list of games in my gaming backlog that I can’t believe I haven’t finished yet.

Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 was released in November 2012. However, it was only last year in 2018 that I added this game to my collection. I believe it was more out of curiosity than anything. I wasn’t too sure what to expect as this was one of the first, more grown up themed games that I had played on my PlayStation 3.

This open world action adventure game turned out to be very engrossing. So much so that I discovered and completed all the watchtowers on the main island without breaking a sweat. I was making my way towards the end of the story at a pretty good pace.

Alas, I either lost interest due to a sharp difficulty spike, or I found a new game to capture my attention. I actually can’t remember now. All I know is that Far Cry 3 was put into my backlog drawer never to be seen again.

Although I have played Far Cry 5 in the mean time, skipping 4 for some reason, Far Cry 3 is still in the back of my mind.

This is a game I am adamant I will finish in 2019. Not sure about getting the platinum trophy for it but at the very least, seeing this story to its conclusion will be enough for me.

Hitman Absolution

Hitman Absolution was my first encounter with the Hitman franchise when I bought this game last year in 2018. It was purely based on a recommendation from a friend which I’m glad I followed up on.

Though not as sophisticated as its newer counterparts on the PlayStation 4, Absolution is still an exciting game to play with a story line you will want to see through to the end.

I was doing so well with this game, I estimated I was well over half way through the game having collected almost everything as I progressed. Then, alas, came the day when I bought a new hard drive for my PlayStation 3 to accommodate more data.

I seemed to think nothing at the time of wiping this original hard drive for use elsewhere before replacing it with the shiny new one. Whether I didn’t care about my game saves or just thought a fresh start would be a good idea, either way it happened and I lost my saves.

Going back to square one on this game at the time was a no go for me and Hitman Absolution joined so many other great games in the depths of my gaming backlog.

Similar to Far Cry 3, I feel that it is totally achievable for me to finish this game in 2019.

Horizon Zero Dawn

I have talked about Horizon Zero Dawn before numerous times on this blog, and here is no exception, unfortunately. This game was released in 2017 and right now it can be bought for a pretty decent price, even with all the DLC expansions.

I loved playing this game. I can’t say enough about the graphics, the story and the characters. If you want to learn more about my love of this game, it is featured in more detail in 5 Games to play if you are new to PlayStation 4.

In this instance, the vastness of the game I think is was caused my interest to diminish after a few weeks of playing it. That combined with the fact that I managed to get stuck in an area that I had no business being in with such bad armor and weapons. Dying repeatedly in the same place doesn’t do much for your confidence.

Obviously this game is on this list because I really want to finish it. Feasibly though, who knows if I will actually getting around to completing this epic campaign and all the associated DLC content. I will have to do my best!

Status Update 11th May 2019: I have just completed this game and acquired the Platinum trophy. Cannot recommend this game enough!

Dark Cloud

I played Dark Cloud as a kid and have fond memories of playing on my beloved PlayStation 2.

I had borrowed this game from a friend at the time, so unfortunately I never owned it myself. Of course then when I saw this game was available to purchase on the PlayStation store all these years later, I definitely bought it straight away and started playing.

The dungeon crawling was so addictive and the town building sections of the game were so engrossing it wasn’t hard to imagine why I sank a lot of hours into this as a kid.

Playing the game on the PlayStation 4 was almost just like I had remembered it; talk about nostalgia.

Unfortunately, this is the part of the story where a big dark cloud looms over this game (see what I did there.. you can’t write this). That cloud was the Crash Bandicoot Nsane Trilogy. Enough said.

I have no excuse not to go back to this game really. I don’t even need to find the disc to pop it into my console. It just sits there on the PlayStation 4 dashboard taunting me with its not completeness. I will defeat you Dark Cloud, mark my words!

Dishonored

Dishonored for the PlayStation 3 is definitely the game I have played least on this list. I first played this game during my No new games month challenge that I set myself in August 2018.

At that time I was literally trying almost every game in my collection for either just 30 minutes or long enough to complete the first level. This was just to get a taster for the game and to see if I enjoyed it at all.

Don’t get me wrong I really thought this game was great. However once I started playing Batman Arkham Asylum that was the end of it.

I really do hope I can get back to playing Dishonored this year. I would love to cross it off of my list and finally say I have finished it.
