If you are a gamer but your partner or your friends aren’t, you might be wondering how you can get them into gaming.
When you are looking for activities to do together, gaming never seems to be anywhere on the list.
Playing video games has a lot of benefits and gaming with others is a great experience in itself.
An excellent way to begin to get others into gaming is by playing 2 player split-screen games.
These are games that you can both play at the same time using the same console, same tv, all while sitting on the same couch. That’s why these games are often referred to as “couch co-op”.
This article will tell you what you need to know about 2 player split-screen games including a list of some of the best 2 player split-screen games on PS4.
What Is 2 Player Split-Screen?
2 player split-screen games are games that can be played by 2 players (often up to 4) using the same console, same tv, and in the same room.
These games are also known as couch co-op games and have been around as long as video games have existed.
Each player has a designated part of the screen that is either split vertically or horizontally depending on the game.
Within that part of the screen, you control the character and what they do while the other person controls the other character.
You can either work together to achieve a goal or play against each other to win depending on the game.
Does The PS4 Support 2 Player Split-Screen?
The next logical question you’re likely to have is does the PS4 support 2 player split-screen? Maybe you own a PS4 console and are looking out for some games to buy to play with family or friends.
The answer is yes, the PS4 does support 2 player split-screen and there are a number of games available that make use of this play style.
With that said, 2 player split-screen has become less prevalent with each new console generation.
This is because of advances in online multiplayer features that allow people in different countries to play together.
This combined with the increasing popularity of video games means that more and more people now own their own consoles. Therefore they won’t be sharing a console with their brother or sister as has been the case in the past.
Best 2 Player Split-Screen Games On PS4
Now that we have more information on what 2 player split-screen games are about, it’s time to dive into some of the best examples of 2 player split-screen games on PS4.
This list is by no means a comprehensive list of all of the 2 player split-screen games on PS4 but it does capture a wide variety of different genres and types of games. That’s why I consider it a great place to start.
#1 A Way Out
A Way Out is a game that was specifically designed to be played via couch co-op as there is no single-player mode in this game. These types of games that are solely co-operative are few and far between these days but A Way Out is a true gem in this category.
The game requires that you work together with another player in order to progress through the game which is made up of scenarios that can be faced in a number of different ways.
Set against the backdrop of a prison environment is a unique and highly effective way of making use of this style of gameplay.
For instance, one player can distract a prison guard while the other player sneaks into the storeroom to grab a set of keys needed to escape.
Co-operation and decision making is needed between each player to progress through the game. This makes A Way Out an ideal game to play with your partner or a good friend.
#2 Borderlands: The Handsome Collection
The Borderlands series of games is the pinnacle of 2 player split-screen games. So much so in fact that the Borderlands series features twice on this list.
In this case, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is a remaster of the PlayStation 3 games: Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. So you actually are getting 2 games for the price of 1.
With Borderlands 2 taking about 30 hours to finish and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel taking about 18 hours to finish, you can be assured that between these games and their included DLC content that you’ll have enough gaming for you and your friends for a long time to come.
The Borderlands series of games are first-person shooters that are packed full of character and feature a vibrant and unique cell-shaded design.
#3 Borderlands 3
The second Borderlands entry on this list is Borderlands 3 which was released on PS4 in 2019.
This game features a brand new jam-packed story with a new team of vault-hunters and villainous enemies to defeat.
In addition to couch co-op, you can also play online with other gamers so there’s plenty of variety here for however you decide to play this game.
What’s more, the ever-increasing list of DLC content ensures there is plenty of gaming content for you and your friends to sink your teeth into.
This is certainly the preferable Borderlands game to start with, in my opinion, in terms of a multiplayer experience. As this is the newest game in the series so far, a lot of the multiplayer kinks have been worked out to create a better gaming experience.
While the story may not be familiar, you won’t mind as you progress through the game and become stronger and better equipped to deal with enemies.
#4 Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled
Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fueled is a remaster/re-creation of Crash Team Racing which was released back on PS1.
It is a kart racing game that sees you play as a character from the Crash Bandicoot universe as you race through a beautifully designed but dangerous race-track against a series of opponents.
This game will certainly be nostalgic for older gamers who played the original game.
What’s more, the game itself is packed full of new characters, levels, skins, and equipment to create a brand new experience for newer gamers.
This game is pretty easy for new gamers to get into and it’s fun but competitive gameplay makes it an ideal game for families to play.

#5 Diablo 3: Eternal Collection
Diablo 3: Eternal Collection is certainly a game for the more hardcore gamers that enjoy grinding over long periods.
This hack and slash action RPG features the Diablo 3 game which was originally released on PS3, in addition to the Reaper of Souls expansion set and the Rise of the Necromancer pack.
This version of the game on PS4 certainly provides you with a ton of great gaming content to spend time with.
Fans of the Diablo series of games will certainly be familiar with this game and its mechanics.
For newer gamers, this may be a lot to take in at first but once you are all caught up with the intricacies you’ll be hacking and slashing your way through each beautifully crafted level.
With all of that being said, if you and your friends are a fan of in-depth and full-featured action RPGs that require guides and walkthroughs in order to master, then Diablo 3: Eternal Collection is certainly the game for you.
#6 Divinity: Original Sin 2
Divinity: Original Sin 2 was certainly a game that was new to me as I began researching for this article.
From what I’ve seen, this makes for an ideal game to enjoy with a friend.
This is an RPG style game that is full of characters, levels, and equipment to explore and collect.
The in-depth game mechanics and high amount of grinding required to progress through the game make it an enjoyable experience to play with a friend, especially if you both already enjoy playing RPGs.
You’ll no doubt be looking up Wikis and guides online to decipher the best build or best strategy for facing certain enemies.
From the video below you can see that this came is similar in style to the Diablo series of games, at least from the surface.
With that in mind, if you’ve played Diablo before and want to try your hand at something new then Divinity: Original Sin 2 would be an excellent next choice.
#7 Dragon Ball FighterZ
Dragon Ball FighterZ is a game that I would consider suitable for all types of gaming experience levels. Though I’m sure some might disagree.
On the surface, it is a beautifully designed, vibrant side-scrolling fighter game.
On the other hand then, you have the lore of the Dragon Ball universe and the in-depth control scheme that requires you to memorize a character’s special moves in order to beat your opponent.
Taking inspiration from other side-scrolling fighters like Street Fighter and Marvel Vs Capcom, Dragon Ball FighterZ adds a fresh new take on the Dragon Ball series of video games.
Over time, additional DLC content has been added to the game to create a more content-rich experience filled with great characters and explosive levels.
#8 Overcooked 1 & 2
The Overcooked series of games is certainly one of those types of games that can make or break a relationship so play at your own risk!
These games task you with preparing, cooking, and serving food in a busy kitchen. You take control of cooks and navigate through the kitchen and the more meal you serve the higher your score will be.
Sounds simple enough I hear you say!
Well now imagine that the kitchen is set across two high-speed trucks that split apart every 30 seconds. Or imagine trying to work in a kitchen where the worktops slide across the deck of a pirate ship that requires you to navigate around each obstacle as food items slide out of reach.
Each fiendishly designed level will certainly test you and your partner’s communication skills and patience as you battle to produce someway edible meals in return for a high score.
These games are honestly a ton of fun to try your hand at and I highly recommend both Overcooked 1 and 2 for family and friends to play together.
#9 Rocket League
Rocket League is one of those games that exploded in popularity on PS4 when it was offered as one of the PS Plus free monthly games. Similar to Fall Guys and maybe to a lesser extent Goat Simulator.
This game is essentially a game of soccer played with rocket-powered cars.
While that may sound like a nuts idea for a video game, Rocket League has become incredibly popular and is very easy to pick up and play even for newer gamers.
What’s more, now that Rocket League is free-to-play, you don’t even need a PS Plus subscription to play online against others.
Oh yeah, and it’s also free!
So there is an added incentive to download this game today and give it a try with family or friends.
Thank you for making it to the end of this article. I sincerely hope you’ve been able to learn a lot about 2 player split-screen games and are considering buying some to share with your friends and family.
